The Kansas Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Lodging Program seeks a dedicated and proactive public health professional with experience in retail food safety programs. This position is part of a team of dedicated and enthusiastic food safety professionals that works closely with all its public and private sector partners and provides leadership in improving the retail food safety system in Kansas. Professionals with a strong commitment to public health and who enjoy working on a team that is active in developing innovative programs are encouraged to apply for this position.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

  • Routinely inspects food establishments for compliance against the Kansas Food Code.
  • Identifies risk factors associated with foodborne illness and establishes action plans to reduce these risk factors.
  • Provides training for industry leaders on food safety principles by organizing and presenting educational seminars using lectures, visual aids, and infield training.
  • Investigates suspected foodborne illnesses associated with food establishments to determine causes and prevent further illnesses.
  • Investigates natural disasters and transportation accidents affecting regulated facilities, food products, or over-the-counter drugs.
  • Conducts recall confirmations initiated by state or federal agencies of food and over-the-counter drugs products at retail, wholesale, and locations of manufacturing, in order to prevent further distribution of hazardous foods by invoking embargoes, seizures, or voluntary product destruction.

The territory for this position will be located in the Northwest area of the state and the applicant must live in the assigned territory.

This position is home-based. The candidate that is selected for this position will start each day from the candidate’s place of residence.

Qualifications:

  • Professionally minded individuals with four years experience of biological science, physical science, or a humanities concentration is preferred. Candidates may also qualify through a combination of relevant education, work experience, training or certification.
  • Excellent public speaking, written and verbal communication.

Requirements:

  • Employee must have a valid Class C (or higher) Kansas driver’s license or equivalent license from another state. Employee is responsible to maintain an acceptable driving record to safely drive state vehicle and be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
  • Must be able to pass state inspector verification within three months of hire and standardization within 24 months of hire and every three years after.
  • Must be able to:
    • differentiate between colors on sanitizer test strips.
    • lift and/or carry 35 pounds of equipment.
    • stand or walk for long periods of time.
    • withstand various temperature fluctuations and environmental/weather related conditions.
    • bend or stoop on a regular basis.
    • drive a vehicle for long periods of time which may result in overnight travel.

Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:

Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate required in accordance with Executive Order 2004-03.
